As a whole, the Christian church puts a lot of emphasis on marriage. But what does God have to say about what we know as Holy Matrimony?
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
-Genesis 2:24
If we look at this passage without really thinking about it, I suppose it just sounds like a man is going to leave his parents and go live with a woman. But if we look at the contxt that it was written in, it seems more like the man is finding a life partner and this is a choice that should not be made lightly.
The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” -Genesis 2:23
When this first appears in the Bible, it is just after God has created Eve from Adam’s rib. Although it may not seem relevent today, it is.
As we entered into a technological phenomenon, the divorce rate began to skyrocket. So why did this happen when people found it much easier to remain married for 70 years during the time that Jesus lived on earth. Simply put, it is because we have so many more temptations then they had in that time. Yes their was prostitution and people who were adulterous, but we have the internet to add on to all of that. Jesus said of people that were married and wanted a divorce:
But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.
-Matthew 5:32
You do not want to make your wife an adulterous in the eyes of God, and yet so many people do. The current divorce rate is about 45% and it is rising. God does not want to see people and their families split up and broken.
So you are probably wondering what this has to do with teens. At the same time that we see divorce rates skyrocketing we also see more and more teens getting married for a variety of different reasons – including pregnancy and inability to live with one’s parents any longer. However, most of these relationships do not last. As well, the information will be useful later on in life when you finally are ready to get married. Marriage is something that should be shared between two people that love each other very much and that when this happens it is pleasing to God.
So is marriage Biblical? Absolutely! And if we follow the principles given to us by God and Jesus, then we should have no problem living out a long and prosperous life with the person that God has chosen to be our spouse.
